Renege or renegotiate?

Renege does not originate from renegotiate, which likewise by definition does not mean “don’t pay your contractors.” Those who have done work on your behalf and completed the job well deserve to get paid the amount you both agreed upon in advance.

I looked it up. Renege comes from the Latin and means “go back on a promise, undertaking, or contract” per Webster’s Merriam. It’s all about breaking your word, and not honoring your obligations. Ergo, it is dishonorable. Sort of akin to being a renegade.

Negotiations and re-negotiations do not involve bullying your counterpart in the exchange. Even when strong-arming, arm-twisting, or glad-handing are on the menu, a negotiation is a relationship that should involve trust. The best kind leaves both parties with their dignity, and offers them an equal chance to walk away winners.
